The Dialectics of Identity and Perception by Evgeniya Grodneva

The Small Gallery, located within Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, recently showcased an evocative exhibition titled 'The Dialectics of Identity and Perception' by Evgeniya Grodneva. Curated by Artroom Coordinator Jo Hastie, this exhibition, which ran from 18th August to 6th September 2022, offered an introspective exploration of how identity is formed, perceived, and continually renegotiated through the lens of intricate patterns and abstract forms.

Grodneva’s work stands out for her unique ability to merge complex philosophical themes with visually striking compositions. In 'The Dialectics of Identity and Perception,' she explores the ever-evolving nature of selfhood, employing geometric patterns and a restrained colour palette to highlight the tension between visibility and concealment, presence and absence.

The artworks featured in this exhibition are characterised by their bold, dynamic patterns, which interact seamlessly with the silhouetted figures they envelop. Through the interplay of black, white, red, and blue, Grodneva brings attention to the dualities that underpin human existence. The figures are not merely subjects within these patterns; they are co-creators of the space they inhabit, symbolising the fluid boundaries between the individual and the external world.

Central to the exhibition is the concept that identity is not static but is in a state of constant flux, shaped by and shaping the patterns around it. Grodneva’s use of patterns transcends mere visual design; it serves as a metaphor for the unseen forces and connections that influence our sense of self. Her work invites viewers to consider how perception itself is a process of negotiation, where what is visible is always in dialogue with what remains concealed.

'The Dialectics of Identity and Perception' transforms the gallery into a space where viewers are encouraged to engage with these philosophical ideas on both a visual and intellectual level. The exhibition challenges the audience to look beyond surface impressions, urging them to explore the deeper, often contradictory layers of meaning embedded in each piece.

This exhibition was not merely a showcase of Grodneva’s artistic talent; it was an intellectual journey into the complexities of perception and the formation of identity. Through her art, Grodneva compels us to reflect on how we perceive ourselves and others, and how these perceptions are continually shaped by the intricate patterns of our environment.

'The Dialectics of Identity and Perception' at The Small Gallery provided a rich and thought-provoking experience. It stood as a testament to Grodneva’s ability to fuse visual artistry with deep philosophical inquiry, leaving a lasting impact on all who engaged with its multifaceted narrative.
